Description

iPFD is a revolutionary primary flight display application for iPhone 4. iPFD leverages the inertial sensors (angular rate and acceleration) and magnetometer in the iPhone 4 to calculate a custom attitude and heading solution using proprietary flight-grade algorithms. This attitude and heading solution is displayed with glass-cockpit style symbology true to modern military and civilian aircraft displays. You will love the elegant and entertaining display of your iPhone 4 in motion!

• Augmented Reality Mode

iPFD supports an augmented reality mode utilizing the rear-facing camera to show live video overlaid with the attitude and heading display. Use it to sight headings to objects in the distance or measure angles to objects above ground level. Best of all, have fun using iPFD while pretending to be a fighter pilot!

• Heading Bug

iPFD has a heading bug (an adjustable visual marker) with digital readout just like a real aircraft. Best of all, you can drag the bug around the compass rose with your finger.

• Limitations

iPFD utilizes aerospace-grade algorithms to provide a high quality AHRS (attitude and heading reference system). However, due to limitations in the accuracy of the iPhone 4 inertial and magnetic sensors, the attitude and heading estimate is subject to error and cannot be used for primary navigation of aircraft.

iPFD is NOT APPROVED for use as primary or backup navigation in aircraft by the FAA.

Only devices with angular rate sensors (gyros), like the iPhone 4, provide full functionality. In devices without angular rate sensors, iPFD will still display attitude information, but this information becomes inaccurate in the presence of accelerations (for example, in a banked turn, the displayed attitude will be incorrect). It will only display correct attitude when the device is not in motion.

Fun! Could be a learning tool too.

:
This is a fun app. I'm a pilot, and I enjoy flight-related applications. Of course this is not a real flight instrument, but it does respond the way a real PFD does, omitting only airspeed and altitude displays, which obviously are not available with iPhone hardware. Maybe the developers could simulate these with GPS data in a future version -- that'd be neat.

I could also imagine this app being used by students and/or their instructors to demonstrate or practice on the basics of PFD symbology in a way that's much more tactile than the average PC simulator. Being able to actually manipulate the phone and watch the display respond is much more natural to me than playing with something on a stationary computer.

One caution: it's very hard to "step on the ball" (center the inclinometer while banked) without really being in a moving vehicle. Conversely, I don't think older iPhones are likely to work as well as the iPhone 4 in a moving vehicle, because they only have an acceleration sensor, rather than the accelerometer + gyro combo in the iPhone 4.

I'll look forward to taking this up in a plane (as a passenger!) to see how it compares to the real thing!

Wow

This is more than just fun. You should add GPS info such as ground speed on the left and GPS altitude on the right, GPS COG inside the compass rose and a record mode with the camera. Output video and pitch, bank, and heading information. Great job for only being out less than a month.

Elegant and simple Primary Flight Display (PFD) simulator!

I'm a pilot and certified flight & ground school instructor. When I saw
this app on the store, I recognized its utility as a great enhancement
to my teaching. I was pleasantly surprised at the clean graphics and
realism of the display symbology. I've been using this app with students
during ground school to simulate flight maneuvers and explain aircraft
dynamics. My students all pay attention when I demonstrate turning in
circles at varying bank angles, and when I rollout at specified headings. This fantastic teaching aid/app provides a real time "hands on" learning experience. It is a MUST HAVE item for my students! I would
love to see the ability to record a video with the PFD overlay in the next version of this app.
